2006 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dakota is the largest pickup in its class and the only mid-size truck available with a v8. Dodge claims its 7150-pound maximum towing capacity is by far the best in class.  the dakota looks big. Completely redesigned for 2005, it's larger than before and looks almost as big and tough as the full-size dodge ram. Getting in is easy, and the redesigned interior is comfortable and convenient with controls that are easy to reach and operate. The club cab version of the dakota achieved a five-star safety rating in frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the federal government.  for 2006, the rear doors on club cabs have been redesigned to open wider. Otherwise, changes between 2005 and 2006 are limited to packaging: a new sunroof and new sound systems are options for 2006 club cab models. An auxiliary audio jack has been added to allow playback from personal audio devices, such as an ipod. Sirius satellite radio now comes standard on 2006 laramie models. Dakota is available with a choice of v6 and v8 engines. Underway, the dakota is smooth and quiet. The optional 4. 7-liter v8 burbles subtly in the background when cruising, but really scoots when the throttle is mashed. Yet its fuel economy is rated within 1 mpg of the standard v6's. The steering is light for easy maneuverability in crowded parking lots and the dakota responds quickly on mountain roads and tracks nice and straight on the highway. lineupdodge dakota comes in two body styles: the club cab is an extended-cab version with small, reverse-opening rear doors to access the rear compartment and a 6 1/2-foot bed. Each can seat five to six passengers, but back-seat riders will be much more comfortable in the quad cab. Both bodies are built on the same 131. 1-inch wheelbase.  three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie.  the standard engine is a 3. 7-liter v6. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 engine is available for all models 785-$860). A high-output version of the 4. 7-liter v8 is available for the slt and laramie. Side-curtain airbags for the front and rear seats are optional 495); we recommend them because they are designed provide head protection. Head restraints and shoulder belts are provided for all seat positions. A sunroof is available for the quad cab. An optional hands-free communications system that uses bluetooth technology integrates a compatible cellphone with the truck's audio system.  option packages for 2006 include trx, trx4 off-road, r/t, and night runner. Each is available in the club cab or quad cab configuration.  trx includes unique five-spoke/five-lug 16-inch aluminum wheels and goodyear wrangler off-road tires; tow hooks; a limited-slip differential; and trx decal on the cargo box. The trx package is available on 2wd st, slt and laramie. Trx4 off-road includes everything in the trx package plus painted shocks; an increased ride height of one inch; heavy-duty service package; skid plates; trx4 off-road cargo box decal; and slush mats.    r/t is an slt with the high-output 4. 7-liter engine and: 17-inch five-spoke/five-lug chrome-clad aluminum wheels; hood scoop; sport appearance package (in red flame or black only); body color grille surround; chrome exhaust tip; cargo box decals; r/t identification on headrests and instrument cluster; and satin silver accents for the center stack and door remotes.  night runner. walkaroundthe dodge dakota looks massive and menacing. The dakota retains its family resemblance to the dodge ram and durango, though it looks crisper and the grille is laid back, not vertical. Dakota's frame is shared in part with the durango suv.  a coil-over-shock independent front suspension is used on both 2wd and 4wd models, with conventional leaf springs at the rear. All models come with front and rear tow hooks and tie-downs in the bed. interiorthe interior was redesigned for 2005 and continues with little change for 2006. Black-on-white gauges are outlined with chrome rings, and the central speedometer is about twice as large as the other two gauges. The angular center stack houses the sound system, climate controls and vents. The designers added in more brushed sheet metal accents around the cockpit, and the whole design works very well in terms of usability, convenience, and reach. The plastic materials look good but not great, and interior fits and finishes were good.  the driver's seat looked good and felt good with its upper and lower support wings and good padding where it counts. Quad cab interiors are roomy. By making the dakota larger, dodge expanded the quad cab interior to nearly 56 cubic feet. The rear seats are deliberately stepped up on their bases so that rear-seat occupants can see out more easily, and they are split into 40/20/40 folding sections with two rear cupholders. Rear-seat room is generous for family use, with 33 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat. A center console and lots of cubbyholes provide space to stash stuff. driving impressionwe found the dodge dakota surprisingly quiet, smooth and civil in its behavior, more like a car than a truck inside. Thick glass, big mufflers, and generous sound insulation throughout the body and firewall help reduce noise.  the dakota drives bigger than it looks, with a hefty, ram-like way about it, a nicely muscular street swagger.  the v8 is worth every penny. The v6 feels a bit light on power for this big, heavy pickup and it doesn't offer a big fuel economy advantage.  the 3. 7-liter v6 is rated 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter v8 generates 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter high output v8 is rated 260 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, thanks to higher compression and more aggressive valve timing. A v6 4wd automatic is rated 15/19 mpg city/highway by the epa; a v8 4wd automatic rates 14/19. At highway speeds it settled down to a nice background burble in overdrive fifth gea. 2007 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Never before have trucks been more capable for hauling and towing nor more competent at coddling passengers. There is no mistaking a ford f-150 for a nissan titan or a toyota tundra, or even a chevrolet silverado for a gmc sierra. And every one of them would be a good choice from a consumer's point of view.  but it was the ram that started the high-style-truck trend back in 1994 when dodge took a risk with a bold, retro big-rig design. That truck transformed ram from a bit player with staid styling to a big-stage event, and it's run with the big boys ever since, sometimes leading, sometimes trailing, but always solidly on the bill. Whether the '07 ram is merely as good as the trucks listed above, or somewhat better, is more a matter of personal preference than anything else.  the light-duty ram 1500 models are smooth and refined. Their cabs are comfortable and convenient, among the roomiest in their respective classes. The quad cab is handy for hauling friends and family but even the regular cab is roomy. Arguably, the ram is the best-looking truck on the market. Its styling is bold and handsome, even more so in its latest incarnation.  ram was extensively re-engineered for 2006, with a new hydroformed frame that's boxed its full length; plus new suspension and body mounts that improved ride, handling, and quietness. At the same time, ram was modestly restyled, with a new bumper fascia, grille, headlamps, fenders and wheels. Inside, the instrument panel, center console and seats were revised for more car-like comfort, while new radios and entertainment features were added.  the 2007 model year brings refinements that stress safety and efficiency. An electronic stability program and remote start are now optional. Fuel efficiency is enhanced on all ram 1500s by reduce-drag brake calipers and low-rolling-resistance tires. It is an exceptionally good engine, smooth and very responsive. The switchover is seamless, and fuel economy is improved by as much as 20 percent, says dodge. Step on the gas, however, and the cylinders reawaken, ready to deliver the 345 peak ponies that make the hemi-powered ram one of the most exciting light-duty pickups on the market. Adding to the hemi's responsiveness is a five-speed automatic.  ram's standard 4. 7-liter v8, while not as powerful as the hemi, delivers responsive performance and is smooth and sophisticated, benefiting from a modern overhead-cam design. For 2007, it's available with ffv capability (flexible-fuel vehicle), allowing the option of running on standard gasoline or e-85 ethanol. The mega cab is reviewed separately by new car test drive. There is no extended-cab ram.)  two bed lengths are available: a 6-foot, 3-inch short-bed and an 8-foot long-bed. Several engines are offered: a 3. 7-liter overhead-cam v6, 4. 7-liter v8, and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard with the 3. 7-liter v6 and 4. 7-liter v8. A five-speed automatic is optional with the 4. 7-liter v8 and standard with the 5. 7-liter. Several trim levels are available:  st is the base model with vinyl upholstery and wind-up windows. St comes standard with air conditioning, am/fm/cd stereo, rear-wheel abs, 17-inch steel wheels and a full-size spare tire. Options include a navigation system, sirius satellite radio, uconnect bluetooth hands-free wireless communication, bucket seats with leather upholstery, six-way power driver seat and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A power sunroof and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system are available for slt quad cabs.  laramie is the luxury trim level. Leather seats are standard, with a split 40/20/40 bench up front and power adjustment for the driver. Laramie is available only with the quad cab and comes with the automatic transmission.  the ram sport comes with the hemi engine and five-speed automatic transmission, unique cloth-faced bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, body-color grille and bumper fascia, fog lamps, and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. Options are the same as for the slt.  the trx4 off-road model comes with unique 17-inch aluminum wheels, p265 all-terrain tires, limited-slip differential, skid plates for the transfer case and front suspension, special red-painted shock absorbers, body-color grille surround, tow hooks, and fog lamps. Otherwise, trx4 is trimmed like an slt. Trx4 comes with 4wd only, but there's also a trx package for 2wd models. Options exclusive to trx4 include lt275 light-truck tires.  a trailer tow group includes a class iv hitch receiver, seven-circuit wiring harness, 750-amp battery, heavy-duty engine cooling and auxiliary transmission oil cooler when equipped with automatic transmission. There's also a work special package designed for affordability with gray bumpers, grille, and 17x7 steel wheels.  safety features include optional side-curtain airbags designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. We recommend getting them; head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts. Three-point shoulder belts are provided at all locations, including the rear center seat. An electronic stability program (esp) is optional. walkaroundthe 2007 dodge ram presents a bold, distinctive appearance with its big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders. The concept dates back a dozen years, but it received a major redesign for 2002 and a makeover for 2006. The headlamps cut back deeper into the fenders, and a flattened front bumper on sport and laramie emphasizes ram's big-rig image. A slot in the front bumper aids engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  ram's trademark front grille remains one of the most instantly recognizable front ends on the road. A thick band of chrome surrounds the grille on st, slt and laramie; the band is body color on sport models and grey on work specials. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders.  a fast, raked-back windshield enhances aerodynamics and water management, while gracefully blending modern sleekness with ram's retro lower body. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smooth transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smooth and integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are mounted on platforms to minimize wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keep water off of the mirrors. That seems high when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. All beds are fitted with boat cleats designed to handle 1,000 pounds each.  ordering the long bed adds 20 inches to the wheelbase of a dodge ram. And a quad cab wheelbase is 20 inches longer than a regular cab. So a quad cab long bed has 40 more inches of wheelbase than a regular cab short bed. Long-bed rams also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26.  the frame is fully boxed and hydroformed. interiorthe dodge ram is among the roomiest of the full-size pickups, and its cab is a pleasant place to be. It sacrifices a few inches of bed space for interior space.  regular cab and quad cab versions offer identical roominess in the front seats. Standard front seating in the ram is a bench split 40/20/40. The narrow center section features a large fold-down armrest with a compartment big enough to hold a laptop. We've found both the cloth and the leather seats comfortable. The driving position is good, with good visibility in all directions, though the aerodynamic front end makes it impossible to see the front corners. Big mirrors on the ram make it easy to see what's behind.  we found the bucket seats in the sport version comfortable and supportive and the sporty fabric looks durable. New fabrics for '07 are designed to be more stain and odor-resistant than before, while also reducing static cling. Laramie models get silver trim adorning the door panels and instrument bezels. Laramie comes with distinctive leather trim, with higher-contrast color seat inserts.  the ram interior shows attention to details that add utility and convenience. The big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable.

2008 dodge charger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A wide range of models is available, but all are comfortable cruisers, offering drivers a friendly haven from traffic and bumpy freeways.  the model line ranges from the sporty and entertaining 2. 7-liter charger se to the 425-hp srt8. Between them are 3. 5-liter v6 and 5. 7-liter v8 models. The charger has all the pavement-ripping, gut-thumping power of the old muscle cars, but it's packaged with modern creature comforts and tempered by handling competency. Put another way, it rides, turns and stops as well as it goes.  the charger is fun to drive and enjoyable for just cruising along. It's perfectly in its element when making time on a freeway. It is a big, heavy, full-size sedan measuring more than 16 feet in length and tipping the scales near two tons, but it's responsive and entertaining.  for 2008, the charger gets minor interior design changes and two new entertainment options. Newly available are sirius backseat tv for the rear entertainment system, and dodge's mygig, a 20 gigabyte hard drive that holds songs, pictures, and navigation system map information. The interior changes include a new instrument panel and center console, as well as upgraded soft-touch surfaces on the arm rests, center console and door trim. Sxt comes with a 250-hp 3. 5-liter v6 and a five-speed automatic transmission with dodge's autostick manual shift gate. R/t models have a 340-hp 5. 7-liter v8 and the five-speed autostick automatic. The r/t can be upgraded to 350 horsepower by ordering the road/track or daytona packages. Srt8 models have a 425-hp 6. 1-liter v8 and the autostick.  the se 21,675) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescope steering wheel, driver and passenger lumbar adjustment, remote keyless entry, and am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack. Available options include an engine block heater 40), a smoker's group 30) that adds a lighter and ashtray, and the se convenience group 1 that adds an eight-way power driver's seat and adjustable pedals 505).  the sxt 25,685) upgrades with an eight-way adjustable power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 60/40 split folding rear seat with fold-down center armrest, boston acoustics stereo with six speakers and 276-watt amplifier, interior air filter, power-adjustable pedals, sirius satellite radio with one year subscription, fog lamps and cast aluminum wheels. The sxt is available with all-wheel drive 28,035). Options include leather-trimmed seats 640), sunroof 950), and dodge's uconnect hands-free cell phone link now with ipod interface. Also available are 18-inch aluminum wheels with p225/60r all-season tires coupled with a rear spoiler. In addition to the protection group and smokers group, there's a comfort seating group with heated front seats, leather-trimmed bucket seats, power adjustable pedals and an eight-way power front passenger seat 1395).  the r/t 31,780) is a v8-powered, high-performance model also available with all-wheel drive 33,880). The r/t adds to the sxt with folding heated mirrors, 160-mph speedometer, upgraded brakes, polished aluminum 18-inch wheels, larger fuel tank, dual exhaust, automatic headlamps, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and power eight-way front passenger seat. Among the options are a seven-speaker boston acoustic stereo with a 368-watt amplifier and subwoofer 535) and remote starting. The electronics convenience group 630) adds a security alarm, programmable universal garage door opener, trip computer, selectable vehicle information display, compass and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.  the road/track performance group 3,350) for the r/t features unique aluminum wheels with black accents, sportier steering, self-leveling shocks, sport seats, performance suspension, a tweaked v8 making 350 horsepower, front and rear spoilers, and 20-inch wheels. The daytona r/t package adds to the road/track performance group assorted aero add-ons, flat black graphics front and rear, and interior trim that includes a numbered plate on the instrument panel.  the srt8 36,155) comes with a 6. 1-liter v8 generating 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, a performance-tuned suspension, a reprogrammed electronic stability control, brembo brakes, goodyear supercar f1 tires on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, and a 180-mph speedometer.  the super bee package for the srt8 comes in surf blue for 2008 with black graphics on the hood, trunk and flanks, along with the v8/bumblebee logo.  for 2008, two new entertainment options are available for all but se models: sirius backseat tv and chrysler's mygig entertainment system. The rear-seat dvd entertainment system is now offered with sirius backseat tv with three channels. Mygig is available in two versions. The mygig entertainment system has 6. 5-inch touchscreen and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to hold music and pictures. The mygig multimedia infotainment system adds a navigation system. walkaroundthe charger recalls the 1966 dodge coronet. Despite its fastback, two-door hardtop styling, the old charger was somewhat blocky, with a squared-off front end, superficially sculpted slab sides and an equally vertical backside. There was the barest hint of a so-called coke bottle look, with the body sides slightly pinched in about where there would have been a b-pillar. Not until the 1968 model year was any attention paid to moving the car rapidly through the air with minimal disturbance. The 2008 charger starts at much the same place on the automotive styling evolutionary curve.  the same design team that parented the chrysler 300 and dodge magnum birthed the charger. The charger is built on the same platform as those two, but is three inches longer overall.  with this legacy, the upright silhouette comes as no surprise. The front end tilts forward as if it's leaning into the wind, specifically to recall the brutish, pre-aero-age styling of its muscle car era namesake.  dominating the front of the car are the trademark dodge crosshairs, chromed on the sxt and r/t, body-color in the se and srt8, and flat black on the daytona. Compound halogen headlights peer out under hooded, almost scowling brows. A thin, trifurcated air intake slices across the lower portion of the front bumper. The daytona and srt8 wear a flat-black chin spoiler. Fog lamps on the sxt and higher models fill small, sculpted insets at the lower corners.  from the side, the demi-fastback roofline and glasshouse look more grafted onto the somewhat fulsome body than a natural extension of the overall styling theme, as if the designer were trying to make a sedan look like a coupe. The beltline arcs softly back from the headlights, where it droops slightly, to about the midpoint of the rear side window, then kicks up over the rear quarter panel, visually bulking up the car's already hefty haunches.  the rear perspective shows a tall, almost vertical backside, with large taillights draped over the upper corners. A modest, kamm-like lip stretches across the trailing edge of an expansive trunk lid, atop which sits a lift-suppressing spoiler on the daytona and srt8. A recess in the bumper holds the license plate. On the se and sxt a single exhaust tip exits beneath the right-hand side, while the v8-powered models sport chrome-tipped, muscle car-idiom, dual exhausts. interiorinside, the dodge charger has much in common with the magnum, which is essentially the wagon version of this car.  the instrument cluster arrangement, which is slightly redesigned for 2008, is pleasantly informative. The big round speedometer and tachometer share the top half of the steering wheel opening, with fuel and coolant temperature gauges down in the left and right corners. The climate controls are conveniently positioned beneath the radio and are easy to operate.  the cruise control stalk has been moved from the 10 o'clock to the 4 o'clock position for 2008, making it more intuitive to use and eliminating the annoying tendency to hit the cruise stalk when signaling a turn.  the standard fabric-covered seats are comfortable, with adequate thigh support and side bolstering. Stepping up to the performance seats in the option packages gets more pronounced bolsters, which is good for those rare times when a twisty two-lane beckons, but not as good for climbing in and out of the car every day. Thanks to the sedan-spec wheelbase, there's plenty of rear seat room, too, even with the front seats at their rearmost positions. The thick front pillars are designed to meet roll-over standards, which makes checkin. 2004 dodge durango review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Totally redesigned, now roomier and refined. introductionthe durango has been around for a mere five years, but it seems so long. The suv world has moved so fast. In those short five years the durango has gone from innovative to dated by its competition. But it has established enduring strengths and character; it's truly rugged and sporty, with distinctive styling that reflects those values.  now comes the 2004 dodge durango, a total rewrite of the durango book. It's seven inches longer, and the wheelbase, width and height have all grown by three inches, bringing it to a size between the chevy tahoe and ford expedition. Both the 4. 7-liter and 5. 7-liter v8s are superb, smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, smart and responsive. Inside, it's quiet, roomy, comfortable and technologically sophisticated. These descriptions would not have fit last year's model.  the all-new durango is both more and less of a truck than it was before. More because it's stronger; and less because it simply feels less like a truck than the former durango, despite its size. lineupthere are three models of durango: st, slt or limited. All models come with either 2wd or 4wd.  the base st lists for $26,565 with 2wd and $29,350 with 4wd including destination, a great value considering the content. It's thousands lower than the msrp of the '03 durango, which was heavily rebated. For the first time, a v6 is available. The new single-overhead-cam engine displaces 3. 7 liters, makes 210 horsepower with 235 pound-feet of torque, and gets 16/21 mpg. Options include the sohc 4. 7-liter v8 engine that makes 230/290 horsepower and torque, a bigger alternator and battery, traction control, halogen headlamps, heavy-duty shocks and springs, a two-speed transfer case (low and high gears for 4wd), side curtain airbags and a sunroof.  the slt is distinguished by the third-row seat, a 50/50 fold-flat bench. The slt can be had with the v6 and 2wd, but the standard engine is the 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is the 335-horsepower 5. 7-liter hemi v8 for $895. The engine is new for durango but has one year under its crank in 2003 dodge ram trucks. Both v8 engines use an extremely smooth five-speed automatic transmission.  a 4x4 slt, the best-selling durango model, runs $31,590 including destination, a highly competitive price considering all the new engineering (which we'll get to). Standard equipment includes body-colored moldings and fascia, power driver's seat, interior wood trim, rear ac, foglamps and roof rails. It boasts that other drivers will be inclined to move over when they see a durango or ram in the rearview mirror. The 'crosshair' grille that's so imposing comes only in high-profile chrome in '04. And the new headlamps are called 'shotgun' headlights. We wish intimidation were left out of the equation. The durango is handsome enough to stand on its own. But the dodge truck image is macho, and it works.  the word 'retro' doesn't exactly fit, but the big-rig look is even stronger than before, with a conspicuously short hood. That short hood leads into a steeply raked windshield which draws a wedge to the silhouette, enhanced by the roof that slopes very slightly forward. The windshield is also aerodynamically slick, although from the front seats it gives the durango the visual feel of a minivan.  the fender flares are exaggerated, not in a wide-tire sort of way but rather more of the semi-truck look; the hood seems as narrow as it is short with the front fenders extended like that. The only other suv we can think of having such fenders is the edgy endeavor by mitsubishi, a company partly owned by chrysler; but curiously, the endeavor came first.  the third element is more subtle. The roofline slopes briefly downward at the rear, where the liftgate window leans to meet it. This reduces the normally boxy suv look. The taillights are distinctive as well. They're called 'afterburner' lights: two big red stacked circles per side, with the sheetmetal molded at their edges to suggest speed. The second and third seats are notably easy to access, as the rear doors open an exceptionally wide 84 degrees. The doors are also bigger, yet they're each five pounds lighter, possible because the body's overall structural strength is integrated into the new boxed-rail chassis.  the rear seat easily flips forward with the touch of one hand, and the seatback flops flat just as easily. This is no small virtue. The second-row seats recline and have their own climate control, so passengers can snooze in total comfort. The well-thought-out detail continues with convenient grab handles cleverly molded into the stubby rear leg of the second seat, which ease climbing back to the third seat. Once back there, there is a small bubble in the ceiling to give an extra bit of headroom. And from the outside, the liftgate opens very easily. The cargo floor is lower thanks to the rear suspension design, and there are 48 full inches between the wheelwell humps.  chrysler has a new and hugely expensive wind tunnel at its headquarters in auburn hills, mich., and it was used extensively with the durango to reduce wind noise. The aerodynamics are fine tuned, including the mirrors and the subtle ducktail at the trailing edge of the hood under the wipers, for reducing wind noise over the windshield. Says engineer bill grabowski, director of dodge truck platform and body, 'even if it's inaudible to the ear, if the data from the wind tunnel shows noise is there, we make it go away.'  call the whole durango 'silent running,' like the movie. More details: the motor mounts are calibrated to reduce the frequencies and harmonics of each engine. The windows have an extra layer of lamination to deaden sound. Foam is injected into many of the body and chassis crannies discovered by engineers to be tiny echo chambers.  it's this kind of effort and detail that especially makes the competitive price of the durango so noteworthy.  from the driver's point of view, the instrumentation is clean, handsome, easy to read and easy to operate. We especially like the simple black-on-white gauges and rectangular black venetian-blind style heating and cooling vents. The center console is deep, under a removable tray, and forward of that is another important compartment called the 'fast-food bin.' there are two integrated cupholders with removable neoprene for different sizes of drink containers. The seats are about right, neither too soft nor too firm. The 4. 7-liter engine is really good. It's powerful and really smooth. But it only gets 14/18 mpg in 4wd, using 87 octane, and the more we looked at that versus the 5. 7-liter hemi, the more we gravitated to the bigger engine.  the 5. 7-liter hemi delivers 105 more horsepower than the 4. 7-liter while providing almost the same economy, 13/18 mpg with 89 octane recommended, 87 acceptable. For $895 more, the hemi seems like a no-brainer; plus, it can tow up to 8950 pounds with the optional 3. 92 rear axle, compared to 7400 for the 4. 7. And the two-speed transfer case is standard with the hemi, optional with other engines.  hemi, by the way, refers to the overhead-valve, hemispherical combustion chamber design, and harkens back to the late '60s when the 426-cubic-inch (7. 0-liter) dodge hemi ramcharger ruled. Chrysler modernized the design last year after it had been gone (but not forgotten) for decades.  still.
